My experience with the family law courts in dependency and guardianship issues began in law school while I interned in the local dependency / guardianship/ adoption court. Now at my legal practice at the Law Office of Joan L. Collier, I continue to provide assistance to those seeking the best interests of children.

Helping Parents Get Their Children Back

If your child has been removed from your home, and you are ready to prove to the court that you can provide a safe environment, I can help you through the legal process. During the juvenile dependency hearings I can help you present your case.

Assistance for Relatives Seeking to Establish Guardianship

If you are a family member of a child and wish to become his or her legal guardian, I can help you through the process of the juvenile dependency proceedings. Whether you are a grandparent, aunt or uncle, adult brother or sister, or other family member who wants to become a foster parent,  having  the right attorney to assist you in your case can make all the difference.

In some cases the biological parent may nominate or give consent for guardianship, such as when entering an addiction rehabilitation program or dealing with extended jail time. The responsibilities for raising the child may be temporary or until the child turns 18. However, guardianship is not the same as adoption, as the biological parent may request that the guardianship end.

When a child’s home environment has been deemed unsuitable by court or Child Protective Services (CPS), the child may be placed in temporary foster care or a shelter during investigations and proceedings. In some cases, the child may be made a ward of the court.
